According to the Economist my work is part of this next big movement! Art and the crisis.
When Sarkozy and Merkel were still operating as a political tandem I got inspired to depict them as two refined girlfriends.
Hence the conversion of Merkel to an abundant bourgeois lady and Sarkozy to an elegant French woman in a romantic setting. Both paintings are based on existing masterpieces. Of course it is a free association, a parody.
Madame M, after the painting of madame Moitessier made by Ingres in 1856.
The portrait of Angela Merkel, the mighty lady of Europe. She has a big, heavy Euro-coin in her hand which symbolizes the Euro crisis and also the power of the German economy. She is surrounded by symbols referring to her past and the button on her dress reminds us of the turn she made concerning nuclear energy.
Madame S, after the painting Madame X made by John Singer-Sargent, 1884.
The portrait of Nicolas Sarkozy, elegantly holding the French flag as a handkerchief. The awards of his position decorate his dress.
As long as this crisis is part of our daily lifes I can not deny it an therefor it will be visible in my work.
