Oil paint is preferred over other techniques for reason of the enormous colour richness. The method of glazing, layer on layer, also results in a depth that is unique for this material.

Her need for refinement was developed when she was trained as a medical illustrator. Here she became familiar with conventions from the profession, such as the light source in the upper left and the use of variable line thickness and contrasts to create 3 dimensionality. Classes in perspective drawing, anatomy classes, model drawing, pen and ink line drawing and refined pencil drawing techniques gave the foundation from which she still makes use.
