Strong contrasts are unified on colourful canvases painted with a soft brush stroke. The beautiful and the frightening are immortalized with the same loving intimacy. From the realization that we are capable of violence, hatred and destruction as well as love and respect, the work forces us to reflect on the choices we can make in this.
The stories behind the paintings are Ilse’s testimonials. By collecting and publishing them Ilse shares her stories. She also likes to talk about her stories: why does the work show opposites? What has led her to visualize in a certain way? Discussing, sharing thoughts and collecting reactions are her way of working.
In the paintings human is central, and recurrent themes are love and death. Also women, nature and social issues such as oil consumption or politics play a role. Her mission runs like a red threat through all her paintings.
